Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you train large Dogs like Rottweilers and Doberman Pinchers?

A: Yes, We have trainers who specialize in large breed dogs.

Q: Can you train my Dog to stop jumping up on the furniture?

A: Yes, this is covered in environmental issues in our training curriculum.

Q: Do I have to pay for my training up front?

A: No, We are pleased to offer a 1/2 down, pay-as-you-go plan.

Q: How long is your Dog Training course?

A: We have three, six, and twelve week-long courses, depending on the dog and the level of training desired.

Q: Who should consider Dogs by Andy's Search & Detection training?

A: The Search & Detection training is geared to the handler/trainer who recognizes the best way to improve their dog handling/training skills is to learn from accomplished, professional trainers who are capable of consistently and reliably reproducing successful results.

Q: Must I already be a professional dog handler to qualify for the Search & Detection training?

A: No.  Some of our graduates were new to search dog handling, some were new to e-collar training, and others have had many years experience handling a dog professionally. If your interest has led you to investigate the complex world of search work, you will build a solid foundation in the Search & Detection training. If you are a professional handler, you will greatly enhance the skill of your dog/handler team by learning techniques to increase reliability in scent work, build more commitment and control in patrol work, and improve essential tactical K-9 unit safety maneuvers. Students of every level of experience will learn from our team of distinguished and experienced Instructor/Trainers.

Q: Must I take the entire training at once?

A: Dogs by Andy is very aware of the demands on today's handlers.  The Search & Detection Academy's Program may be broken down into segments to accommodate the schedules of the students.

Q:Can I attend the Search & Detection training if my goal is to learn e-collar training only?

A: Yes.  Students who wish to learn to use the remote collar to improve their skills as a trainer, build the performance of their working dog, and/or to become a more valuable asset to their organization are encouraged to apply for acceptance.

Q: Will I be required to utilize the e-collar if I choose to come through the Search & Detection training for search work only?

A: No. Many aspects of what is taught in the program do not involve a e-collar, including scent theory, tactical operations training, canine communication among others.  However, the e-collar is a tool that is used within the program and our approach to its use greatly facilitates enhanced communication, timing and precision in K-9 training.  Such choices rest with the individual student.

Q: Is the Search & Detection Academy beneficial to someone new to dog training?

A: There are many terms and ideas that might be new to someone with no experience in search work and/or e-collars.  However, we pride ourselves on effectively communicating these concepts in an intelligent, practical and easily learned fashion.

Q: Will the e-collar techniques I learn help me train a wide variety of dogs of diverse temperaments, breeds and disciplines?

A: Yes.  From high powered working dogs to shy and fearful dogs you will learn to understand why dogs respond the way they do and how to communicate effectively, rapidly, and kindly using the e-collar.

Q: How do I apply for admittance into the Search & Detection training?

A: Simple! Contact us!

Q: May I contact former graduates of the Search & Detection training for referrals?

A: Yes.  In fact, we strongly recommend it.  Graduates have frequently written letters expressing their appreciation of our program.  If their busy schedules permit, many are also happy to share their experiences via telephone and e-mail as well.  A referral list will be provided to serious applicants.

Q: I just got my first dog - Can you recommend a good Vet in the area?

A: Yes, We'll send you to a great Vet where we send our personal Dogs!
